Book Review: Decayed State by Vanessa Maki
disclaimer: I was given this work as an ARC in return for an honest review.
Vanessa Maki's chapbook, 'decayed state' is filled to the brim with vivid and haunting imagery that tackles a garden of emotionally-charged topics.
Favourites include the dark and grimly romantic 'anger never leaves me', 'I know what drifting is' and 'dark paradise'.
Other haunting pieces follow the draining trails of trauma, the relentless cycles of self destruction, numbness and big questions such as 'what is normal?' and 'what does it feel like to be normal?'
As a whole, this chapbook is a mini treasure chest of poetry that not only draws you in with its dark, lyrical language but also with its blunt and brave vulnerability.
